The new Bauhaus Museum

The #bauhaus #museum #weimar. The #Klassik #Stiftung Weimar possesses a unique collection of works highlighting the background, history and lasting influence of the State Bauhaus, which was founded in Weimar in 1919. Today the collection comprises about 13,000 pieces from the most important school of art and design of the 20th century. In terms of its size and quality, it is one of the most important collections of its kind in the world, second only to the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin.
With the launch of a special investment programme in 2008, the German federal government and the State of Thuringia commissioned the Klassik Stiftung Weimar to construct a new Bauhaus Museum in Weimar. The new museum would continue operating in the place of the provisional Bauhaus Museum, which was installed at the Theaterplatz in 1995. Following an architectural competition, which attracted international attention and submissions from 536 applicants worldwide, a jury selected the concept by Prof. Heike Hanada with Prof. Benedict Tonon in summer 2012. The winning proposal positions a clearly defined geometric, solitary structure at the edge of the Weimarhallenpark.
The entire »Cosmos Weimar« can only be perceived when one views the new Bauhaus Museum at one end of a spectrum that includes the Weimar City Castle and numerous other museums operated by the Klassik Stiftung.
At the end of 2018 the bauhaus museum will be opened. ©
